Front Facade
A realtor couple we know, contacted us because they wanted to build their own home. While the houses they liked best were architecturally designed and detailed, their own budgets dictated something that would be much more economical. Therefore, we took some decisions at the beginning of the process to keep costs down. The first and most important was to keep the form or shape of the house rectangular. A simple shape gets the most “bang out of your buck.” To avoid a box-like feel, I planned for a “bump out” in the staircase, which would give the interior a dramatic, light filled stairway as well as provide more visual relief to the exterior. This detail has since become the focal point of the house.
ENTRANCE
As for the quantity of the space, the couple were willing to consider combined kitchen, dining, and living area, if we could create a closed utility space where all the Indian tadkas or deep fried dishes coupld be prepared. So, by reducing the quantity of the space by atleast 500 sq. ft., more of their budget went to the character of the house. With it’s front facade, the house looks substantially bigger than its 2350 sq.ft. ground floor area. The one variable where the clients were not willing to compromise any cost on was CHARACTER- the quality of interior space. For this couple, the quality was not connected with high-end materials but in how the materials were used.

By reducing the quantity of the space by atleast 500 sq. ft., more of their budget went into the quality of interior spaces.

Ground Floor Plan
The home has an open floor plan with direct access to the backyard facing south-west. The backyard has a covered patio space with a corner seating area. Back inside, all the living areas are connected by a cedar ceiling. Built-in cabinetry adds extra storage in the hallway. The second-floor bedrooms offer views of the surounding area, and the roofs on the living and dining space below.
